The Blocky Doge Collection
NFTs are non-fungible tokens. NFTs have created a new way for digital artists to make money from their art. A quite popular collection of NFTs is the Blocky Doge Collection. Included in the Blocky Doge Collection is Blocky Doge #87, which is pictured above. The Blocky Doge collection has 100 pixelated doge NFTs. This NFT was minted on Ethereum. Currently, the owner is Dojer. Blocky Doge #87 was created by BillyM2k. In fact, all of the Blocky Doge collection was created by Billy M2K. Blocky Doge #87 is currently on sale for 23 ethers, which is equivalent to $98,343, on Open Sea (Open Sea 2021).
Blocky Doge #87 is a doge with a birthday hat. Some of the variations within the Blocky Doge Collection include doges of different colors, and different accessories. Some of those accessories include masks, different hats, glasses, and some even have their tongue sticking out. Each of the hats, glasses and other accessories all come in a variety of colors.
The art of the NFT is inspired by the popular doge meme that has been circulated throughout the internet for quite a while now. The doge meme started when Atsuko Sato posted pictures of her Shiba Inu dog on Tumblr in 2010. The picture that caught everyone’s attention was one where the Shiba Inu was glaring sideways at the camera. At first, the memes used that picture, and they included the inner monologue of the dog. Over the years, the meme made its rounds through Tumblr, Reddit, 4chan, and many more social media websites. The meme has had impressive longevity considering that it started a decade ago and is still being used and referenced in NFTs and on the internet in general (Know Your Meme 2021).
Eventually, Dogecoin was created in 2013. Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that was created as a joke by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. Despite the fact that it was created as a joke, it is still used by some as an investment. Just the NFTs, dogecoin’s name was inspired by the meme discussed above (Dogecoin 2021).
The Blocky Doge collection is not the only collection that features Doge. The Doge Pound is a collection of more than 10,000 art pieces that are NFTs. The art pieces that are included in The Doge Pound Collection were selected by Professor Elon. This collection is on the Ethereum Blockchain. The features that vary across these NFTs include clothing, eyes, background, eyewear, earring, hat, mouth, and fur. The collection was founded by Crypto Babe, John Lemon, and White Fang (The Doge Pound 2021).
The Blocky Doge and The Doge Pound are only two NFT collections among many that are inspired by the doge meme. Others include Dogepunks, Doge: Proof of WOW, and more. Some examples of NFTs from these collections include doge as Mario, Leonardo DogeCaprio, Doge Lightyear, and many more that are available to view on Open Sea.
